Using Google Sites

These instructions step through using Google Sites and other products to create your web presence. At the end of the steps, you will have a site that looks like this "Sample GTUG" site.


Pre-requisites

  • Establish your branding (logo/icon) if not using defaults
  • Establish your name/short name
  • Establish your domain name

Creating Related Sites

First, you should create accounts on related products, so that you can refer to them in your site.

Google Calendar

  • Go to http://calendar.google.com
  • On left hand sidebar, in "My calendars" panel, click "Create" link in bottom right
  • Give name "--- GTUG Events", optional description
  • Pick relevant timezone
  • Select checkbox for making calendar public
  • Share with any other administrators of the group

Google Groups

  • Go to http://groups.google.com
  • Click "Create a group"
    • Give name "--- GTUG"
    • Give description "This group is for developers in Some Place that are using Google developer products."
    • Specify that group is "public" (default)
  • Once created, click "Group Settings"
    • Click "Appearance"
      • Download 48*48 logo from GTUG Icons
      • Upload that as current picture
  • Create the first post in the group, following this template


Blogger


Twitter

  • Go to http://www.twitter.com
  • Click "sign up" (sign out first if necessary)
  • Specify username: ---gtug (shorter name preferred)
  • Once created, click "Settings" at top
    • In default "Account" tab:
      • Specify more info URL as your domain or Google sites URL (if domain not setup)
      • Give one line bio: " --- Google Technology User Group"
      • Give location: "Some place, somewhere"
    • Click "Picture" tab
      • Download 48*48 logo from GTUG Icons
      • Upload that as current picture

Moderator

  • Go to http://moderator.appspot.com
  • Click "Create Series"
    • Give title "-- GTUG Ideas", description "Suggest ideas for --- GTUG topics and events."
    • Specify "ideas in a topic"
  • Add the following topics:
    • Meeting Topics/Formats
    • Code Workshops
    • Special Events/Activities
    • Group Projects

Facebook

  • Go to http://www.facebook.com/pages/create.php
  • Specify Organization -> Non-profit
  • Give name: " --- GTUG"
  • Authorize creation of page
  • Click logo in new page, edit picture
  • Download large icon from GTUG Icons
  • Upload as picture
  • Link to Twitter account (click tip on page)


Creating the Site

  • Go to sites.google.com
  • Click "Create new site"
  • Select simple theme

Adding Pages to the Site

Welcome
  • Change Layout to 2 column, with the full-width box at the top
  • Change title to "Welcome", add a short description, per the sample site.
  • Twitter:
    • Put cursor in first column below, click "Insert > More Gadgets"
    • Search for "Twitter"
    • Choose Twitter gadget, and customize settings to specify your username
    • Specify width as 100% and height as 300px.
    • Un-check "include title"
  • Feed
    • Put cursor in right column below, click "Insert > More Gadgets"
    • Search for "Simple RSS"
    • Choose first result, and customize settings to specify the ATOM feed of your blog. (Tip: Get ATOM feed for Blogger blogs by visiting front page, scrolling to bottom, and clicking "More Posts (ATOM)"
    • Specify width as 100% and height as 300px.
    • Un-check "include title"

Events

  • Change Layout to 2 column, with the full-width box at the top
  • Put information about the next event at the top
    • Include link to map of location, or embedded map
    • Include date, time and duration
    • Include title and description
    • Include link to registration form (Can use Google Spreadsheet Form / Eventbrite / Meetup)
  • GTUG Calendar
    • Put cursor in right column below, click "Insert > Calendar"
    • Find "--- GTUG Events" on your list of calendars, select.
    • Specify width as 100% and height as 300px.
    • Specify type as "Agenda"
    • Un-check "include title
  • Dev Community Calendar
    • Click this link to add the general Google developer events community to your calendar account: http://www.google.com/calendar/render?cid=dev-community-calendar@google.com
    • Put cursor in right column below, click "Insert > Calendar"
    • Find "Dev Community Calendar" on your list of calendars, select.
    • Specify width as 100% and height as 300px.
    • Specify type as "Agenda"
    • Un-check "include title

Media

  • Click "Insert > Picasa slideshow"
  • Specify album to insert
  • May want to embed Youtube videos or Flickr gadgets here as well.


Customizing the Site Appearance

Adding more sidebar boxes

Changing navigation

  • Go to Manage site > Site layout
  • Click "edit" under Navigation box
  • Un-check "Automatically organize"
  • Add each page in desired order (Welcome, Events, Forum, Blog, Media)
  • For Blog, click Add URL and point it to your Blogger page
  • For Forum, click Add URL and point it to your group

Adding a favicon

  1. Download the smallest icon from the GTUG icons page.
  2. Rename the icon to favicon.ico.
  3. Go to Manage site -> attachments.
  4. Choose radio button for 'Upload attachment to / (top level)'

Changing the header logo:
  • Download logo from Graphics or make your own
